In 146 BC, the Roman proconsul Gnaeus Egnatius laid out the Via Egnatia, the road that became the most important overland route in the eastern Roman Empire. It ran from Dyrrachium, modern Durrës, 50km west of Elbasan, across the Balkans to Thessaloniki and on to Byzantium. For 500 years, every legion sent east and every supply convoy bound for Constantinople passed through the valley where Elbasan now stands.

Julius Caesar marched this road in 48 BC to fight Pompey. Mark Antony used it. Augustus travelled it. This wasn’t a minor provincial track; it was the empire’s main eastern artery, and the city sat on the single most defensible point along it. Sultan Mehmed II understood this exactly as the Romans had: when he strengthened the Elbasan Castle in 1466, he built it directly on the Via Egnatia line, controlling the same chokepoint Rome had identified sixteen centuries earlier. The castle walls and towers still stand, enclosing a tangle of medieval streets, a mosque, churches, and the city’s Ethnographic Museum. Llixhat, sometimes written Lixha or Llixha, sits 8km from central Elbasan, about 10 minutes by car on a flat, paved local road. The springs produce warm mineral water that’s been used therapeutically since Roman times, and given their position close to the Via Egnatia, they almost certainly served as a rest stop for legions and travellers on that same road. Today there’s a small spa complex and a set of natural pools, mostly used by Albanian families on weekends rather than foreign visitors, which keeps the atmosphere relaxed and unpretentious. Spring and autumn are the best months, when the warm water feels best against cooler air. A standard rental car manages the road without any difficulty.

Shebenik-Jabllanicë National Park: honestly, you’ll want an SUV

Southeast of Elbasan, in the highlands toward the North Macedonia border, Shebenik-Jabllanicë is one of Albania’s least visited wilderness areas: dense beech and pine forest, and a genuine population of brown bears, wolves, lynx and golden eagles. Depending on the entry point, it’s 40 to 60km from Elbasan, around 1 to 1.5 hours of driving.

The approach road is paved and fine in any standard rental car. It’s a different story once you’re inside the park: the tracks toward the interior trailheads narrow and roughen quickly, and an SUV is genuinely the right choice if you’re heading beyond the main entrance for hiking or wildlife observation. Visitor numbers here are very low. This is unmanaged, off-the-beaten-path Albania, not a park built for tour buses.

The A3 to North Macedonia: Lake Ohrid within a couple of hours

The A3 continues southeast from Elbasan through Gramsh, Librazhd and Pogradec to the Qafë Thanë border crossing, around 90 to 100km and roughly 1.5 hours of driving. It’s one of Albania’s better-maintained highways, and the final descent toward the lake on the Albanian side is genuinely dramatic. One vehicle note worth being direct about: the main roads to Belshi Lakes, Berat and Llixhat are paved and fine in any standard car. The unpaved stretches around the Belshi lakeshore, the final approach to Holta Canyon, and anything past the entrance of Shebenik National Park are where a higher-clearance SUV genuinely earns its keep.

None of this is reachable on a fixed schedule. Buses run between the main towns on the A3, but the lakes, the canyon, the springs and the park entrances all sit off that line, reachable only by whoever’s holding the keys.
