Fier itself: a working city, not a postcard

Fier is home to roughly 120,000 people and sits at the centre of Albania’s main oil-producing region — refineries and processing plants shape the skyline, not boutique hotels or pedestrianised old towns. Apollonia Archaeological Park: Albania’s largest ancient city

Apollonia was founded around 588 BC by colonists from Corinth and Corcyra (modern Corfu), who named their new city after Apollo and built it on a defensible ridge above the Vjosa floodplain. At its height under Roman rule the city held an estimated 60,000 people across roughly 140 hectares — by far the largest ancient urban site anywhere in Albania, and one that genuinely rivalled major cities elsewhere in the Greek and Roman world. Cicero described it in his own writing as a great and important city, and it was exactly that wealth and standing that made Apollonia worth sending a future emperor to study at.

Only around 10% of the site has been excavated to date.
