Rana e Hedhun: a sand dune that falls into the sea

Lezhë is ancient Lissus, founded in 385 BC by Dionysius of Syracuse, and it sits 8km southeast of Shëngjin, around 10 minutes by car. Within the ruins of its medieval castle stands the Mausoleum of Skanderbeg, built inside what was once the Basilica of St Nicholas, holding fragments of his helmet, sword and armour.

Gjergj Kastrioti, known as Skanderbeg, led Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Empire for 25 years from his mountain strongholds, holding a line that historians generally agree slowed Ottoman expansion into western Europe. He died of fever in Lezhë on 17 January 1468. Sultan Mehmed II is reported to have said, on hearing the news, that Christendom had lost its sword and shield. The castle and mausoleum are open to walk through freely, with a small museum on site covering the period; an hour is enough for most visitors. Lezhë in the morning and Shëngjin in the afternoon, history followed by the beach, is one of the better half-day combinations in northern Albania, and one most visitors to the coast never make time for.

The Velipojë coastal road: new enough to catch your map app out

A new coastal road now links Shëngjin to Velipojë, running north past Rana e Hedhun and the Ballkoni Panoramik viewpoint. It’s recent enough that some navigation apps and older versions of Google Maps don’t show it properly, so the safer approach is to follow the road signs north from Shëngjin rather than trust the route a phone suggests.

The drive covers the dune 3km out, the viewpoint a couple of kilometres further, and Velipojë itself at around 20km, the whole run taking 25 to 30 minutes on a road in good condition the entire way. Velipojë is a quieter, less developed beach resort than Shëngjin, with a long stretch of sand and noticeably fewer people on it.
